MRI Contraindications

Review all contraindications with the person before scheduling or running sessions. Add explanations for any cleared contraindications to the “Contraindication Notes” section of subject database.

Poor eyesight and can not wear contacts

  • If they do not wear contacts, ask for their glass’s prescription

  • Disqualify if:

    • Cannot read/see clearly 1.5-2ft away

    • Prescription is over -2 in each eye

Metal inside/on person's body

  • Ask them where it is located and what it is

  • Disqualify if:

    • Metal screws or plates

    • Retainers/braces on top AND bottom teeth or along top teeth

    • Nonremovable metal jewelry

    • Copper IUD

    • Have pacemaker

  • Allow if:

    • Retainers/braces only along bottom teeth

    • Replacement is made out of nonmagnetic metal (nonferrous)

    • Jewelry is plastic and/or removable

    • Hormonal IUD

Tattoos/permanent makeup

  • Ask them where located, how old, and if professionally done

  • Disqualify if:

    • Less than 2 months old

    • Located on face/neck

    • Not professionally done

Surgery

  • Ask them what type of surgery they received and how long ago it was

  • Disqualify if:

    • Surgery was invasive and less than 3 months ago

Claustrophobia

  • Do NOT schedule if claustrophobic; scanner is small
