Measure the Skull Midpoint
Ask for consent and inform the subject what to expect
“Before I apply the net, I’m going to measure the center point of your scalp and mark it using this cosmetic crayon. This will involve touching your scalp and moving your hair. Do I have your consent to do so? ”
Measure the distance from the nasion (front) to the inion (back) and mark the halfway point in cm by drawing a line perpendicularly to the measuring band’s orientation
Measure the distance from the left tragus to the right ear tragus and mark the halfway point in cm by drawing a line perpendicularly to the measuring band’s orientation
Extend each line measurement to make a small crosshair
Apply the Net
Place a towel around the participant's shoulders to avoid dripping onto their clothing
Give the net's connector end to the participant to hold
Ask for consent and inform the subject what to expect
“This is our EEG net. It's been soaking in a solution with electrolytes and baby shampoo, so nothing harmful for your skin or hair, but the net will be wet when we apply it. There are face and chin straps that will come over your face, so we ask that you keep your eyes closed until we get everything situated. If anything feels uncomfortable, please let us know right away so we can adjust. Do we have your consent to start applying the net?”
Proceed with applying the net
Experimenter 1: Expand your hands inside of the front of the net with your palms facing away from you, and the net rests on the backside of your hands. Position yourself in front of the participant.
Experimenter 2: Expand your hands inside of the back of the net with your palms facing away from you, and the net rests on the backside of your hands. Position yourself behind the participant.
Both experimenters: Raise your arms over the participant to position the net above and behind their head. Bring the net down with your hands spread as wide as possible. Align the reference (Cz) electrode with the midpoint previously marked. Stretch the back of the net down around the skull.
Adjust the Net
Gently tighten the chin straps of net to adjust the net's positioning on the participant's face
Make sure the reference electrode is aligned with the skull midpoint.
If necessary, adjust the net's positioning
Weave your fingers in the between the electrodes of the area in question. Gently lift the net a few centimeters and shift it in the desired direction.
Make sure the sponge surface of all electrodes are making contact with the skull
